Midlands and South East

The main city in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe is Gweru, which is situated on the main road and rail route between Harare and Bulawayo. Other Midlands towns include Kwe Kwe, Redcliff and Kadoma. Years ago, these centres were formed because of a growing mining industry. Factories were built to produce a large variety of goods and the surrounding fertile land was developed for crops and cattle production.

About 100km to the south is the city and province of Masvingo. With its wide streets and historic buildings, Masvingo is 29 km from the famous Great Zimbabwe. Here lie the remains of the ancient citadel and holy place which once contained the original Zimbabwe Bird, now a symbol of the nation’s cultural heritage. The city was first occupied in the 11th century and continued until the 15th century, spanning an area of 722 hectares (1,780 acres) and at its peak, housed up to 18,000 people. It is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of its most prominent features is the beautiful walls, some of which are over five metres high and which were constructed without the aid of mortar. A mystical feeling may still be experienced on first sight of the ancient granite wall curling around the hill above and built on the edge of a sheer cliff. The sense of awe may persist, whilst standing below in the Great Enclosure which houses Zimbabwe’s famous Conical Tower.

The impressive ruins of Danamombe and the nearby smaller ruins of Naletale can be found 80Km out of Gweru, off the Bulawayo road. They are difficult to reach due to poor road access, but well worth the effort if you have the time and the right 4×4 vehicle. The site at Danamombe consists of a ruined town dating from the 17th or 18th centuries AD that was destroyed in the 1830s, when the Matabele arrived in the area. Danamombe (together with Khami and Naletale) was one of the centres of the Rozvi culture.

Nearby is Lake Kyle, a rich fishing and boating lake, renowned for its scenic beauty, especially as the sun sets over the surrounding Beza and Nguni mountains. To the west the impressive Birchenough Bridge crosses the broad Save River in a single silver span. South of Masvingo , the road passes through a beautiful natural area of high wooded hills with rocky outcrops… Zimbabwe kopjes…. and low lying valleys. Long bridges span the Runde and Bubi as they flow towards the Save and Limpopo Rivers.

Finally in the far south-east and bordering on Mozambique, lies Gonarezhou…The Place of Elephants….137 000 hectares of beautiful wilderness with the towering , coral pink Chilojho Cliffs and where hippos play in the shallows of the Chipinda Pools.  Owing to its vast size, rugged terrain and its location away from main tourist routes, large tracts of Gonarezhou remain as pristine wilderness. It forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Gonarezhou with the Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. Animals can move freely between the three sanctuaries and it is a truly magical place to visit.
